Spicy Tofu Recipe

Made with firm tofu and a super simple stir-fry sauce using everyday pantry ingredients, this recipe is perfect for busy weeknights. Ingredients:

Firm Tofu - 500g

Salt - 1/2 tbsp

Garlic Powder - 1/2 tbsp

Corn Starch - 1/4 cup

Dried Hot Chillis - 7 or to taste

Scallions - 40g

Garlic - 4 cloves

Grated Ginger - 1 tbsp

Coriander - 10g

Cooking Oil - 1/2 cup (for frying tofu)

Cooking Oil - 2 tbsp (for stir fry)

STIR FRY SAUCE

Water - 1/2 cup

Light Soy Sauce - 2 tbsp

Hot Chilli Sauce - 2 tbsp

Tomato Ketchup - 1 tbsp

Sesame Oil - 1 tbsp

Sugar - 1/2 tbsp

Corn Starch - 1 tbsp

COOKING PROCESS:

1. Prep the ingredients:

  • Soak 7 dried chillis in cold water before the cooking process. Remove the seeds before soaking them in water.

  • Finely chop 4 cloves of garlic

  • Cut scallions into small pieces, then separate white and green parts

  • Roughly chop 20g of coriander

  • Grate 1 tsp of ginger

2. Make the stir-fry sauce:

  • In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of water, 2 tbsp of light soy sauce, 2 tbsp of your favourite hot chili sauce, 1 tbsp of tomato ketchup, 1 tbsp of sesame oil, 1/2 tbsp of sugar and 1 tbsp of corn starch, then leave it aside.

3. Prepare the tofu:

  • Pat dry the 500g of tofu with paper towels

  • Break tofu into bite size pieces

  • Season the tofu with 1/2 tbsp of salt and 1/2 tbsp of garlic powder before coating the tofu pieces with 1/4 cup of corn starch

  • Then fry the tofu for about 4-5 minutes.

  • Place tofu pieces on a wire rack to drain oil. This process will make them crispy too.

4. Stir Fry process

  • In the same pan, remove most of the oil, leaving only 2 tbsp of oil.

  • Sauté the aromatics; the garlic, ginger, white part of scallions and pre-soaked dry chillis for about 3 minutes.

  • Add the stir fry sauce that was prepared earlier, and slowly bring it to a simmer.

  • Once the sauce thickens, have a taste and adjust if necessary.

  • Then add the tofu, green part of scallions and coriander

  • A quick toss to ensure that everything is coated in that delicious sauce

  • And, we're done!
